I've been extraordinarily lucky: Traveling to more than 50 countries, guiding for 10 years in Alaska and Oregon, living in Central Asia and experiencing quite a bit along the way. All while managing to develop a few good stories. In between teaching, a 2 year old and a wife in grad school - I also started a new direction by starting a career in art. Here is art, travels and other aspects of my life.

Newest Paintings

I've become obsessed with a new focus on painting. I've now completed three of these large format paintings. They are 48 inches long and 24 inches tall. The large format is a new avenue for me, and causing me to open up a little bit. The crazy thing is these paintings actually take almost less time than a detailed larger format drawing. I am using all my spare time to bust them out. I am hoping I can build a big enough portfolio to start selling them.

New Years on the Owyhee

About halfway through New Years eve day I was twiddling my thumbs wondering what I was going to do with the day and I was suddenly inspired to hit the river. I loaded the dogs and hit the road for the the Owyhee. Upon arrival it looked like a cold and inactive day on the river. After a bit of searching I located a pod of rising fish. After a sneak up on the fish and a practice cast I hit the first fish on the first cast. Considering these Owyhee fish are getting pretty smart, I tied the size 20 midge with 7x. I was now thinking it was a mistake, but alas, I managed to get the fish in with little problem. I was the start to a good afternoon. Within an hour I landed 5 fish ranging from 17 to 20+ inches. Not a bad little session. I've been back since, but not as much luck.

It ain't pretty, but it is big. A three weight, 7x and a size 20 midge. Not too shabby for a January day.
