I've been extraordinarily lucky: Traveling to more than 50 countries, guiding for 10 years in Alaska and Oregon, living in Central Asia and experiencing quite a bit along the way. All while managing to develop a few good stories. In between teaching, a 2 year old and a wife in grad school - I also started a new direction by starting a career in art. Here is art, travels and other aspects of my life.

Sawtooth Mountains, Powder and Sunshine

We were invited to a friends cabin in late January for a weekend of backcountry skiing and hanging out in a remote cabin. It was a great experience up in the Sawtooths, in fact I would go so far to say it was a luxury ski weekend. A cabin with hot water, access via snowmachine and great food. Not exactly roughing it off the beaten path.

The great skiing was actually directly behind the cabin and we marked this slope up several times in knee deep powder.

Goose thoroughly enjoyed his first venture to the backcountry as well. The only worry was he would get too close and take us out. You had to stay a few turns in front of him.
The cabin was about a 3 mile snowmachine ride to the base of the Sawtooths. As you can see from the trailer behind the machine, we did not go lightly.

We did a late night ride to a decent pitch to try a moonlit session of making turns. First off, it was bloody cold. I think the temp was at least 10 below. We had a spot in mind and it was a great idea, but getting the snowmobiles to the top of the pitch in the dark was a difficult effort and we ended up having to hike the last part.
Upon reaching the top, you needed to really get used to the dark. Once your eyes adjusted it was not awful visibility, but ripping down a steep slope in the dark is a little odd. After all the effort and time, it was worth it.
Goose was loving the snow and is the newest convert to backcountry skiing. He was hooked.
Amy cutting some freshies. Awesome snow.

The family pose in front of the Sawtooths. It was a great weekend.
